L'esprit de l'escalier (staircase wit) is thinking of a clever comeback when it is too late. The phrase can be used to describe a riposte to an insult or any witty remark that comes to mind too late to be useful—after one has left the scene of the encounter.

People used to write novels and short stories. Then we devolved into posting blog entries. We further descended to 140-character bursts of words. And now, we think we are being creative when we post a "borrowed" picture on Instagram with a superfluous caption that says "THIS." The more technology allows us to express ourselves more freely and more frequently, the poorer our command of language has become.
